The Volkswagen ID.4 is the second car from Volkswagen to be sold with an ID badge. The ID.3 was the first and that was said to be the third major stepping stone in Volkswagen development (the Beetle and Golf being numbers one and two). But the ID.4's name isn't hiding any meaning, just signifying that it's large than the three.

Hitting our roads earlier this year the ID.4 is somewhere between a large estate, and SUV and a people carrier, so the question that remains is whether the car itself is as confused as the concept seems? With a list price around £35,000 it's one of the most affordable large EVs around, but then you find out that it has sealed drum brakes at the rear, so is it also a car of compromise? We drive the Volkswagen ID.4 to find out.
