Kia is taking risks. The rise of the Korean brand from terrible cheap cars that Top Gear took the mickey out of to staple of good quality, affordable motoring has been almost remarkable, until you remember how large the Hyundai Group, which owns Kia, actually is (it’s massive).
But, that wasn’t a risk, to make good cars that sell is pretty much the opposite of “risky” for a car company. No, the risk Kia is taking is attempting to jump to into the realms of some real big hitters.
It sort of began with the Stinger, a GT car that no one expected with extremely good dynamics and a rather desirable design. But that new assault, taking on the likes of Mercedes and BMW, builds some real steam now with this, the company’s first bespoke EV – the EV6.
This is the sister car to Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, but to look at it, you’d never tell, it’s also a step up in quality over the sibling Hyundai. But, there’s also a price to that, as it starts at £40,000 and change. The question here is, can Kia do it? Will they manage to take a step up in cost and make it worth it to its loyal customers? We’ve driven the EV6 to find out.
