There was a time when hybrids were considered boring. The Toyota Prius, for example, was created to save fuel rather than to have fun. And then along came the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder, which all proved hybrid power could put a smile on your face.

The trouble is, that hypercar trio were colossally expensive – it seemed performance hybrid powertrains were the reserve of the extremely wealthy. And then the Honda NSX rocked up.
While Ferrari and McLaren were sticking with V8s, Honda introduced the NSX with a hybrid V6. Some argued it was too complicated and too heavy, especially given how simple and lightweight the original NSX had been, but hindsight helps to put a lot into perspective.
Today the story of the hybrid supercar is really picking up, with the McLaren Artura and Ferrari SF90 Stradale (admittedly on another price level) hitting the roads. But the NSX, now nearing the end of its life, has been going about its business since 2016. Ahead of its time? Absolutely, but some of the best are.
