Pagani now has two ultimate-spec track-only naturally-aspirated V12 hypercars, in the Zonda R and new Huayra R. They are actually, surprisingly different, with the Huayra R taking a more stylistic, less downforce-heavy approach to its look, while the Zonda R is very much the mutant downforce monster. Even the V12s are different, with the Zonda using a derivation of the Mercedes-AMG M120 V12 and the Huayra using a bespoke HWA V12, based loosely on a Mercedes casting.

So naturally it’s good science to compare the sounds of these incredible cars. What better venues than Monza and our own Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. Monza with its sprawling straights that allow these machines to really stretch their lungs, while our Hill lets you get nice and close to the cars as they explore the rev limiter and test their braking resolve.
Truthfully, right from the off, we’d say the Huayra has the edge. Why? because it revs higher, it has a broader vocal range, giving even the Aston Martin Valkyrie and GMA T.50 a run for their money. That’s not to say the Zonda is exactly muted, it’s just not lusty like its younger sibling. As always though, these things are subjective. What do you think?
