To say Formula 1 drivers are the best drivers in the world is a fair statement. But to say they are the only fast drivers in the world would be a huge misjudgement, as this clip from the 2013 Festival of Mastercard presented by Speed goes some way to prove.
Video: F1 title‑winning Tyrrell screams up the Hill
The driver is John Delane, an American businessman and amateur racer who is now the custodian of several Tyrrells, including this, the Tyrrell 006, and the car in which Jackie Stewart won his third and final F1 world title.
Having started racing in his thirties, Delane made it his mission to improve his skills, taking lessons and racing wherever and whenever he could, and as you can see, he’s as comfortable chucking the 006 up the Goodwood Hill as I am writing these words. As fast as an F1 driver? It’s unlikely, but still chuffing fast? Very much so.
