Take a grid full of Ford Mustangs, throw in an assortment of professional and gentleman drivers and send them out to race during the 81st Goodwood Members' Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport to see which two-driver team can bring their car home first. Names on the entry list included the likes of Tom Kristensen, Andy Priaulx, Tom Ingram, Tiff Needell and Gordon Shedden.
That was the recipe for the Ken Miles Cup presented by LGT Wealth Management, and the result was the very best kind of chaos. The stampede of pony cars was on the pace from the moment the green flag dropped and, one safety car session aside, that’s the way things stayed until the chequered flag fell almost an hour later. The fixture was our way of marking the 60th anniversary of the Mustang, and what a celebration it was. With endless sideways action, the occasional bit of panel rubbing and expert displays of car control, the thrills were relentless all race long.
At the first corner, an entire sea of Fords vied for the same patch of tarmac, and the door to door proximity barely relented. It was Ash Sutton’s daffodil-scattering interface with the chicane that caused the aforementioned safety car session, but it was game on again the moment the field was given the go ahead.
Andrew Jordan, who had taken over from Michael Whitaker, built a decisive lead, going on to cross the line 6.5 seconds ahead of second-placed Alex Brundle who was sharing with David Brabham. Completing the podium was Jake Hill who had taken over driver duties from Rob Fenn.
