In memory of Rob Wildeboer
As a fitting and lasting way to remember and celebrate Rob’s life and his huge contribution to Goodwood, we have set up a webpage in his memory where you can leave your messages, stories and pictures of Rob.
Roxy Lingham-Davis
Rob was one of the first people I met when I started working at Goodwood 9 years ago. He was so warm and welcoming and always checking if I was ok and carried on to be a friend as well as a colleague. I will truly miss banging into him at the motor circuit, he really was one of those special people who had that twinkle in his eye, that only few special people have. Sending all my courage and strength to his family in this very sad time. What a LEGEND he was and I feel lucky to have known him!
Darren Norris
Rob and I had a long standing and often repeated conversation about how to get one of the few surviving WWII Mosquitoes to fly at Goodwood as it is a plane we both admired. He thought it was possible despite one being in Canada and the other in New Zealand which I think summed up his gentle and anything is possible attitude to life. A real gentleman and sorely missed.
Julia Stedman
Rob was genuinely one of the nicest men I have ever met, he would go out of his way to help anyone and always had a smile on his face. One of my fondest memories is going flying with him on my birthday one year - I was petrified! But he put me at ease and it was an incredible flight over Goodwood and Chichester, one I will never forget. He will be so so missed at Goodwood it really won't be the same without him. Julia x

Rob was a great person. He made us laugh and smile everyday at work. A truly committed aviation professional with a huge passion for all aspects of general aviation and all the people involved. I will fondly remember a flight in the Super Cub with Rob where we searched out and circled my home. Please accept my sincere condolences for your family's loss.
Ruth Sinclair
One of Nature's gentle, gentlemen. Rob had a warmth of spirit and enthusiasm for life which will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege and good fortune to know him. My very sincere condolences go to his family for the particularly untimely loss of this lovely man.
Chris Edwards
I first met Rob in early 2011 where we were hoping to host an event at Goodwood for a large charity event for Aerobility. . Everything we mentioned in that first meeting, Rob was saying ‘I am sure we can do that or maybe we can just tweak it a bit’. Never a no and not ever a negative comment. We held the event in 2012 and his help, support & commitment throughout to it was full and genuine. A friendly, self assured, likeable and generous person, he will be missed greatly by those that knew him
Scott Farndell
Rob you were one of my heroes and you were the first person outside of my family I turned to after mum died. I hope you are flying in heaven, I'm going to miss you so much Scott Farndell
Richard Curry
Such a wise kind and super friendly guy. He was instrumental in helping me restore G ASSW. It was such a pleasure to have his guiding hand on this project. Whenever you saw Rob even if I had not seen him for a while, he was so welcoming. He will be sorely missed, All my family are saddened by his untimely loss. Our condolences to his family.
Jackie Lambourne
Robert was a great boss to work for, he was passionate about flying and a good fun guy. He will be truly missed by everyone at Goodwood I feel certain. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was inspiring to those who were interested in anything aviation and always keen to help those who wanted to learn more. Shine bright and fly high.
Marion Calver Smith
I'm still in shock that Rob has gone. The fact that he had been at Goodwood forever and always seemed to be at the airfield. I sat with him and the aerodrome team many times in their office and always enjoyed the stories he told and the banter with everyone. His knowledge of planes, flying and Goodwood was extraordinary. Rob kindly took me on a few flights over the years, when testing out the Goodwood planes - the last time we flew over our (then) new House in Elmer and along the coast - it was a beautiful clear day and you could see for miles - so whenever I look up at the small planes flying over our home, I will always think of that day.
Paul Melbert
Like so many, on a few occasions I had the pleasure of flying with Rob. We went up one day in a stunt plane to capture photos of the crop circles that had 'mysteriously appeared' on the airfield before the Revival, he asked me to hold on to the camera tightly so that it didn’t bang around in the cockpit when we barrel rolled - thankfully he was joking, or he saw the look of fear on my face and decided against it! ... but all in a Goodwood day’s work for him.
Martyn Love
I flew with Rob for only a few weeks, he was instructing me through the tail wheel conversion. I knew from the get go that we would get on well . What a lovely guy, friendly, warm, compassionate and very professional. He saw me through the course, which I don’t mind admitting I found challenging at times, yet unlike me he never got angry or showed any lack of conviction in my ability to succeed. Thanks Rob.
Jonathan Smith
I have known Rob for many years and can never recall a time when I wasn’t confronted with a welcome, a smile and a positive attitude. Most recently Rob helped me overcome a very difficult personal situation with care, consideration, empathy and compassion for which I will always be grateful. Taken far too soon. Blue skies my friend.
Robert Spencer
The lost of one of lifes nice guys. You will be missed.
Harry Stanley-Jones
Rob was a true aviator and an inspiration to all keen future aviators, I want to thank him for his guidance and teaching during my final phases from my PPL training. I want to send my condolences to Rob and his family and may his legacy inspire others in the coming future.
Henry Wallace
I first met Rob in 2018 when I began my PPL course. From my first conversation with him, it was immediately apparent how friendly and knowledgeable he was. Rob was always there when I had a question and he always took the time to share his experience to make me the best pilot I could be. He was a real gentleman, and every time I visit Goodwood in the future I will think of him. Blue skies, Rob.
Matt Coleman
Rob will be sadly missed by us all. One of life’s great guys - nothing was too much trouble for him - especially if it involved flying! Rest in peace Rob, thank you for everything.
Matt Colebrook
Rob will always be the very spirit of Goodwood. Our paths first crossed in 2009 when I ambitiously started the ground up restoration of my beautiful Stinson. Over the four years that followed his keen interest, passion and knowledge fuelled me on to completion. An aeroplane that always brought a beaming smile to Rob's face, a smile we all miss so dearly. The Carbon Cub that followed ignited Rob's sense of adventure and fun; your presence will forever be with me. A true gentlemen in every sense of the word. A friend I miss dearly. Tail winds always Rob x
Paul Beaver
The Beaver family have been members at Goodwood for more than a decade. We enjoy the airfield, the estate and especially the people. chief amongst those was Rob who was always cheerful and helpful. People like Rob do not grow on trees but are gifts to other people's lives, often by their very presence. Rob will be missed and is mourned. Great man, great pilot and engineer.
Bob Mayhew
Can’t thank you enough for your company , help, and sympathetic approach to guide me through the solo course. I will dearly hold close that, it was through you that I became I believe the first solo course flier….. You will always be the epitome of 'only the good die young' RIP mon ami, and thank you. Condolences to the family.
Kim Goddard
We were very sorry to hear the awful news of his passing. I would personally like to thank Rob for all his advice and support he has given to my son Tyler in his training and career as an aircraft engineer at Goodwood. Our love to his wife Donna and his boys who my son sees at the ATC . X
Rob Widdows
The thriving aviation and aerodrome we see today is huge credit to all your work, dedication and enthusiasm. You will be greatly missed by all who worked with you over so many years at Goodwood and your legacy is the business we enjoy today.
Jane Reddie
Rob, your enthusiasm for aviation and the flying school was infectious, we were all honoured to be working with you. I am so grateful for your friendship. Will miss you always. Love to Donna, Zak and Sam x
Ian Stevens
Mate, many years ago I found a friend and the friendship continued until I left 2017. Always had time for a chat and smile. Such a shock and yours will be hard flying gloves to fill, remembering the good times. RiP fella, blue skies ahead, thoughts go out to Donna and the Boys. Ian & Sandra.
Andy Leahy
I had the pleasure of meeting Rob on many occasions at GAC events and in passing numerous times at the airfield. He was the most genial person and always willing to help. A kind soul who looked help where ever he could. He will be sadly missed from the Aero Club crew and his ever present smile will be remembered always.
Austen Cresdee
I first met Rob 2 years ago when starting work at ultimate high. I would clean their aircraft in the hangar and nearly all pilots would just walk by and not even notice me. However Rob was the one who would always be interested in my new starting career and prospects of becoming an airline pilot. He would always offer advice during these chats whilst I would clean the aircraft. Thankyou Rob for the advice and having the time to have a chat with me.
Martin Klusmann
I had the pleasure of flying with Rob in the Cub and - as one of my all time aviation highlights - in the Harvard over West Sussex and the IOW. He was a totally committed and very skilled and precise pilot and instructor who really made flying historic aircraft a wonderful personal experience. Rob has also greatly contributed to my experience of what Goodwood and Flying at Goodwood really stands for. My thoughts are with his family who I hope will be able cope with this terrible loss which leaves all of us speechless.
Madi Breach
Rob, where do i start. Thankyou for being my dads bestest friend since school, you have a heart of gold and whenever you were in the room it lit up. Your laugh was contagious as well as your smile. From our camping trips to our kayaking trips, from playing manhunt and the ‘moving bin’ to toasting marshmallows around the campfire. I feel extremely lucky to have known you. What a guy you were, you will forever be an inspiration. You are the reason why if you want to do something, you do it and you don’t give up because you’ve proven it so many times. All of my love goes to his family, i know you have the strength deep down.
Mike Ward
RIP Rob, such a sad loss, you were truly a gent and will be greatly missed. I'll never forget the exciting flight in the C421, shutting down the R engine to find a vibration then to find just after the restart the L engine actually had real smoke pouring out! Such fun flying, great memories.
Anne Barrett
Such fond memories of Rob growing up in Fishbourne with my son Zak. All the young lads Martin Andy and Nigel. Condolences to Donna and sons xxx
Andrew Demetriou
Heartbroken. Thanks, for the instruction and the wonderful memories. I will never forget the day you handed me the controls for my first solo.
Bryan Warnett
Such a great guy and such a loss to everyone. Rob was always there with a big smile and a ‘How are you, nice to see you Bryan’ whenever we met. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Rob, Mark and I were stood watching the F1 car and the Spitfire. Rob had to go as he was co-pilot on a flight and I took the attached picture. Blue skies, always...
Jack Newman
Rob, you will be remembered by all of us at Goodwood with smiles on our faces, laughter for old jokes, and gratitude for all that you've done for us. We have lost a supportive boss, a kind-hearted friend and an utterly decent man. You will be sorely missed, but warmly remembered. 'Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds'
Ferris Cowper
Rob was my first flying instructor. He set me on the path to flying which is now my passion. How can I ever express suitable thanks to Rob? He put this passion in my heart and it will there for ever. How many people can say they did that? He was a remarkable man
Mark Hillier
A good pilot , engineer and fellow aviation enthusiast. Will miss you Rob
Christopher Turner-Hawkes
As an airline training captain approaching retirement , I wished to continue flying. I flew with Rob and asked if I could join the flying club. He enthusiastically welcomed me to the club and always was enthusiastic about flying . He would say ‘I just love being up there !’ A true gentleman and aviator. My thoughts are with his family.
Steve Ford
There are some people you work for that leave a permanent impact for all the right reasons. Rob was truly that person. Having supposedly retired I found myself leaning on Rob, learning each and every day from a true Aviator. His sense of humour and ability to reality check everything and everyone is the stuff legends are made of. I still have not truly come to terms with his sudden loss and perhaps to be true to him, we shouldn’t, for he will always be with us.....grinning away.
John and Thomas Halloran
Thomas and I will remember Rob as a gentle, positive instructor who took my then 15 year old son on his trial flight, surprising him as we walked to the aircraft with a ‘ so happy to do the take-off Thomas? ‘. Thomas is now working on his PPL at Goodwood and looking forward to joining the RAF. I also had the pleasure of flying with Rob and we will both remember him fondly. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, even briefly.
Di Hudson
I live up the road from Rob’s and he knew where our house was. One day before Christmas, he came up to me and said “blimey your neighbours have gone over the top on their Christmas lights haven’t they?” I paused, and realising that our neighbours didn’t have any decorations up at all, said “no Rob, that’s my house”. There was a short pause, I looked into his twinkling eyes, and we laughed. Wonderful moment. He walked off with that long, slow, recognisable-from-a-distance stride of his and I’ve never forgotten that encounter. Never will. He was a lovely guy, kind and considerate and will be very much missed by everyone - certainly us in IT who saw him every day. I send all my love to his wife and children and his colleagues of the Aerodrome to whom he was a inspirational colleague and good friend.
Dave Ford
I had the honour of working with Rob for a few precious years. Rob was a true aviator, and teacher like no other. It breaks my heart to think of the Aerodrome without him. Rob always had time for anyone, his ability to connect with people on whatever level they needed was a special quality. My deepest condolences go to his family and the unbearable loss they have suffered. Rest in peace Rob, you are sorely missed.
John Nurse
Rob was one of those men that you felt comfortable with from the moment you met him. He always had time to say hello and chat if you wanted to. I always felt welcome and cheered when I came into the club and he was there. I Probably felt I knew him better than I did but I know I shall miss that smile and friendly welcome at the airfield. I was surprised how dreadfully sad I felt when I heard the sad news. Rob you were one of natures real gentlemen. You will be hugely missed by so many. Au revoir
Stuart Clements
I have recently enrolled with Goodwood to regain my pilots rating and had a lesson with Rob in early July. In just that one hour lesson it was so easy to pick up on Robs passion for flying and his desire to help others, he made me feel so much at ease. Although it was a very short period of time I knew Rob, I very much value the time I spent with him and the knowledge he passed on in that single lesson. I was so shocked in hearing the sad news and pass on my heartfelt condolences to his family.
Andy Kyte
Goodwood aero will never be the same without Rob…. He was a friend to the whole family , growing up s neighbours in Fishbourne, it was obvious to all from a very early age his destiny lay in the clouds. His bedroom was always full of model planes he had built from balsa wood and fabric and he was always looking up at the sky telling us how one day he would be up there flying a plane….. Loosing his Dad when Rob was very young and then a few years later his Mum and Gran must have been so hard for him, but typical of Robbies character he always managed to be happy and smiling despite hi loss. I remember the fun we had within our gang when he told us he was working as one of the governments new “YTS “ apprentices at Goodwood….he soon turned the tables when within a year or so he would typically have to dash off to pick up a plane from Goodwood to go to France or wherever to sort out a small plane that had developed engine troubles and needed his skills as an aviation mechanic. He went on to achieve great things at Goodwood and was able to share his passion and enthusiasm to all you met him. I always had tear of laughter whenever I met up with Rob , he was kind and honest, but he also had a wicked sence of humour, At revival every year we would often end up having to physically stay apart from each other as we would be hurting from the latest joke or funny event shared between us…our humour bounced off each other to the detriment of our ribs! The pain of his passing will be felt by so many for so long….I honestly can’t imagine going to Goodwood aerodrome and not seeing him…. I’m humbled and proud to have known Rob and call him my friend, our thoughts are with Donna and the boys and to the staff at Goodwood where there is a very much family atmosphere within the aero team - on behalf of Nigel, Sarah ,Mum and myself…. Fly high in clear sky’s my friend….I’ll always look up and think of you when I hear the Harvard flying above! X x taken far too soon from all that loved him…..x
David Lindfield
Rob was one of life's good guys, always passionate and committed to whatever he did. The depth of his aviation and "hands on" engineering knowledge was unrivaled. No matter how busy he was, he would always make time to speak with you, no matter what question or advice was being sought. Rob had a genuine kind and approachable nature and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Deepest and sincere condolences to his family. HIGH FLIGHT - John Gillespie Magee Jr. (18 August 1941) "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew — And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, – Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
Claudia
Rob was endlessly kind. When I originally moved to the UK I knew nobody, and nobody wanted to give me a job flying. I did the FI course at Goodwood, and on the last day of the course Rob handed me a Goodwood jacket and welcomed me to the team. Rob was willing to give me a chance when nobody else would, and through Goodwood he gave me a sense of community. Rob was also endlessly patient. He always had the time to talk to me, encourage me and answer my questions. It was because of his kindness that I finally ended up getting a job as a first officer with an airline, through a connection I made at Goodwood. I had to move away for my new job, but when I left Rob told me that there would always be a place for me at Goodwood if I wanted it. When I lost my job due to Covid-19, Rob was quick to offer me my FI role back. He was a true gentleman, who was thoughtful and generous and always willing to help the people around him. He was my friend who changed my life for the better and I am absolutely heartbroken that he is gone.
James Gosling
Rob really was special. He always had time for people. I first met him when I was helping with a fly2help charity day. He showed our people around the airfield and made THEM feel special. Later, when instructing at Ultimate High, I would often see him and we became friends. It seems inconceivable that he won’t be there at the airfield any longer. But in a way he will be, because his spirit will remain, as will my memories of him,; most prominent of which will be of him in his dark flying suit, preparing to fly the Harvard. I hope these heartfelt messages will be of comfort to his wife and family at this sad time.
Brad Eccleshare
Such a sudden and sad loss to us all! Having first met Rob 29 years ago as I walked across the airfield to take my first flight in a Piper Tomahawk, he went on to become not just a friend, but also a fellow aviation enthusiast, family friend and a well regarded work colleague too. With a steadfast passion and zest for all things aviation at Goodwood, he leaves us with many fond memories and the legacy of the Aerodrome we enjoy today. I was recently reminded of the time you sat my daughter Phoebe in the Harvard while I did circuits in a Cessna, just one of many moments when you brought joy to others. As a family, our thoughts and efforts turn to how we can support Donna and the boys. Rob - you’ll be missed but not forgotten! Rest in peace my friend…
Alex Anderson
Rest in peace flying high. Thoughts with your family, friends. Az ex R.F.F.S Goodwood
Kerry Harnes
Was an honour to work with Rob when he helped volunteer at 461 Chichester Squadron over the years! He will be sorely missed by everyone who has the pleasure to know him! All my thoughts and love to his wife and boys! Thank you Rob for all you did for the Cadets, Myself & the aviation at Goodwood Aerodrome! Fly high Rob! RIP
Tex Crampin
Rob was a rock of professionalism and experience in the Goodwood aviation arena and such a pleasant person. My last flight with Rob was when he gave my son Ander a flying lesson in the club Cessna - I would have loved to fly with him more. His knowledge of flight engineering also enhanced his instructional value.
Kieran Walsh
Rest in peace Rob, you will be forever missed
Nick Plackett
We met Rob and his family through the boys mutual love of biking and planes. Rob was always so supportive of our son and encouraged everyone around him. He was kind and friendly with a warm smile and will be missed by us all. Our love goes out to Donna and the boys. Love Nick, Laura, Ben and Ella x
Sam Kurtul
I am very saddened by his tragic loss and still struggling to come to terms with it. My deepest sympathies go to his family in these difficult times. Some people leave a long lasting impression in ones life - Rob was one of those very rare persons, a true gentleman with a warm heart which conveyed through his smile. Rob had a huge impact in establishing the fundamentals in my flight training. He was my instructor on the day I went on my first solo. A day no pilot will ever forget. He just stepped out near the tower and said just do what you have been doing with his warm, friendly but reassuring smile. I had one of my best landings that day. On another occasion he was showing me steep turns, it was a brilliant sunny day but with low cloud cover. We found a hole in the clouds and flew above them. This was now steep turns in heaven! We even caught up with our own halo! We were in this together. Thank you for your friendship and invaluable guidance. See you in the clouds again one day Rob!
Zak
The only way I can find to write this, is as a message to you Rob, I guess because I still can’t find a way to accept it. You were my best friend through my teenage life, my best mate through everything, the influence that helped define who I was as an adult, the laughs in the best of times, the rock and security in anxious moments. Rob, you’ were an amazing personality, that was evident to anyone who met you, the enthusiasm you had,,, no, the passion, the passion you had for your dream of flying was clear for all to see, and to know you realised those dreams fills me with happiness at a moment filled with sadness. Rob, you are always a part of me, and you are and will continue to be missed. Rob, go fly now…. Go fly…
Paul Green
I only met Rob a couple of times but it was immediately evident that he was a genuine, trustworthy person. Aviation needs role models like Rob and I hope that the aeroclub scholarship scheme in Rob’s memory will enable someone with his attributes achieve their dream and make a positive contribution to aviation.
Paul Fraser-Bennison
I’ve only known Rob for a couple of years or so but in that time really enjoyed his company. He was instrumental in getting my Stinson on the line at the 2019 Revival which led to my wife and I having a most amazing experience. Her mobility issues worried her about getting to facilities and Rob was on hand more than once to help her. She still remembers how kind he was to her amongst the all the craziness of the weekend. Terry Pratchett said “No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away…” On that basis Rib will be with us for many, many years.
Lucy Baldwin
Rob was the loveliest man at Goodwood. A true gent and someone who would take the time to get to know you and welcome you into the aerodrome community. A kind, gentle soul that lifted the room whenever he entered. It's so sad to be writing this, and to know Rob is no longer with us, but I send my love and condolences to Robs family, and take comfort that Rob is now flying high forever.
Trevor Reeve
I first met Rob in 1996 when he was a young engineer in the maintenance hanger. He very kindly helped me with some issues with a plane I had built without charging me. Over the years he has been unceasingly friendly, kind and generous with his time. As the head of the flying school he facilitated for me to be a part of Goodwood Flying School. I am very upset to hear of his passing, I will miss him, he was one of the very best people.
Alan Baker
In the brief time that I knew Rob, I found him to be an absolute gentleman, always around with a friendly and welcoming face - such a terribly sad loss and my thoughts go out to his family.
Mark Greenfield
The whole team at Ultimate High is devastated by the loss of this wonderful man. As a professional he was the reason that Ultimate High returned to Goodwood and always encouraged and supported our team in everything that we did. As an all round top bloke he always had time for everybody and was extremely generous with his time. And as an incredible friend we will miss him the most. Blue skies and tailwinds Rob.
E.Nigel Beckley
Life can be so cruel for those of us left behind now that you are no more. Rob you are gone, free of life's budden as you rest in perfect peace. My sincerest sympathy to your loving wife and family, but do rest assure Donna, that we will share your pain and you will never be alone. Rob will never be forgotten, he leaves behind a legacy with all those he taught and have flown with.
David Sumecki
I first bumped into Rob when I was learning to fly about 8 years ago. I saw him recently when I was grabbing some lunch at the Flying School about 3 months ago. It was a beautiful day and I spotted him getting out of a plane. I remember thinking at the time, now there is someone who is doing something he loves day in, day out. I could not believe it when I heard the new that he had passed. Such a nice guy, a real gentleman and someone that will be impossible to replace at the Flying School. Every time I see or hear a plane fly over my house, I now think of him. Such a loss.
Ritchie Southerton
There are no words for such an unimaginable loss! You will be missed by so many!!! R.I.P Rob

Roger Brown
Always a pleasure to meet and fly with, never a chore, Rob always took the time to welcome one to the club. I counted him as a friend and planned future flying in the Harvard which will be sorely missed. A gentleman and enthusiast of which there are too few in this world. While mourning remember to celebrate a great human being.
Sam Whatmough
Rob was just the nicest man. He always had time for everyone, was generous in his nature and always willing to share his passion, enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge. For many years he was my boss, but more than that, I was lucky enough to call him a friend. Whether is was adventures in SC, his beloved Cub, Revival or banner towing he was full of life. Our thoughts are with his beautiful family. Our happy memories of Rob will always be with us. Blue skies dear friend. Sam, Rachel & Dakota
Paul Mayhew
Shocked and saddened to hear of Rob’s sudden death. Having checked me out in the cub he was always very helpful especially with licensing issues. A great loss to us all. Sincere condolences to the family.
George Fogg
Rob was always there to help. He was incredibly friendly and thoughtful, easy to talk to, and was brilliant at everything he did. Whether he was doing aerobatics in the Harvard, instructing in a Cessna or running about doing paperwork, he was fantastic at every part of his job, and made you feel at ease whenever stressed. Very sad to hear of his passing, and only disappointed I didn't get to spend more time knowing him. All thoughts go to his family.
Steve & Julie
So sad to lose such a great guy. My sad condolences to his family, and colleagues at Goodwood. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I have flown with Rob on a number of occasions and found him to be one of the best instructor I have flown with and very professional at his job. I will miss him. Fly high Rob.
Simone Head
I was fortunate enough to join Goodwood Flying school team just over five years ago and find myself working with Rob as one of our team. This was a man whose infectious humour dominated our environment, he was not only a very kind man but someone who thought of others before himself and encouraged a spirit of enthusiasm for aviation right to the core. We always laughed our way through all sorts of tricky situations, he made our lives all the richer for having known him. He even delivered a lovely bunch of flowers through the pandemic to my front door. On my last day at Goodwood he surprised me and took me flying again, we had the most incredible banter during the flight but he was always so professional in his deliverance. He asked me what I wanted to see from the air, we flew over my new house and on to Kingsley Vale a piece of beautiful local countryside. He said to me can you see a white deer they are very rare…. We saw two! That says it all! My best wishes to all his family at this saddest time he was truly a remarkable man. A space will always be there and never be filled. RIP.
Barry Lutman
I have known Rob for over 20 years or so whilst working at Goodwood and in the last few years as a neighbour. Rob was such a lovely guy and would always take the time for a chat with anyone he knew. He was very passionate about the aircraft industry and Goodwood which showed in the way he worked and passed on his enthusiasm to others working along side him. I would very often see Rob "being taken for a walk" by his wonderful dog, Robs arm stretched out and the dog pulling him along. Rob was a very caring guy and would help anyone who he could. My thoughts are with Donna and the boys at this sad time. RIP Rob and Fly High
David Ames
The last time I spoke to Rob was a phone call to say that because of new insurance restrictions I would not be able to fly school aircraft solo only with a safety pilot because of my age. This was a shock but Rob handled it in a very sensitive friendly way which left me very disappointed but not angry . The few occasions I flew with Rob he always made sure it was enjoyable and not hard work. Rob was very friendly always made time to talk to you and the man to go to for all things to do with Aviation. He will be missed by all at Goodwood but those who will miss him most are his family and all our thoughts must be directed towards them and their loss.
Simon Howell
Rob's tragic untimely loss will be felt by the many within the aviation community, for it would be a truism to say that he touched us all with his passion, Professionalism, kindness and abundant enthusiasm. He was for sure a "total aviation person" and one of the very best. Indeed I hope that his family will gain some measure of comfort from the very high esteem in which he is held by us all. He will be missed.
Joe Devanny
I am shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely death of Rob, I had known Rob for over 12 years, always cheerful, charming and engaging - never too busy for a quick chat - an ambassador for Goodwood - he will be sorely missed.
Melanie
Sorely missed, my heart goes out to his precious boys, adored wife and family. And of course the Aerodrome team, you guys are doing him proud by keeping up the good work with a smile and don’t forget the spontaneous fish & chips, just because. He’s to be celebrated, truly a gentleman and I’m honoured, to know and work with him. Blue skies Rob
Kevin Webb
Rob was an amazing friend and next door neighbour to our family. He was so enthusiastic about all things Goodwood and aviation. I’ll always remember showing him the photo I took of B17G Sally B flying in for the Revival. “That’s not bad Kev, here’s the photos I took”. They were from inside Sally B, in flight, taken from the bomb aimer position. He was given the last minute opportunity to fly back to Duxford in this famous old plane and he grabbed it! It was always great to see him flying the Harvard out of Goodwood and I’ve attached a photo of him, coming into land, with the racecourse in the background. To Donna and the boys, our condolences.

Rob was one of the good guys. I first met Rob when filming at Goodwood at Revival. I think in 2016. We got stranded on the far side of the motor circuit with no way of getting across the runways. Out of the drizzle appeared a buggy. I thought, man we’re in trouble, we’ve got ourselves in the wrong place, we are trying to make an impression but not this way. The driver, smartly dressed and possessing friendly authority shouted over. ‘ where do you need to go? Rob then spent the whole weekend making us his business, helping us get around, feel comfortable and giving advice. This was Rob to a tee; always willing to go out of his way to help, he was always thinking of others. He made me feel very comfortable filming in an alien environment whether in the schools Cessna or his beloved Cub. His fantastically dry humour and friendly face was always a highlight of any trip to the aerodrome. A proper decent guy.
Jerry Mudford
Thank you Rob for many years of friendship, for your never failing courtesy to everyone, for your professional approach to everything to do with aviation and especially for the times spent in the air together. You cast a glow over Goodwood which will be remembered for many years to come. We miss you.
John Schellevis
Rob and started at Goodwood around the same time, over 30 years ago, as Aircraft Engineers. We shared the same Dutch heritage and the same birthday. His passing is beyond tragic. As a friend and colleague, I shall miss him everyday. My heart goes out to Donna and her family at this unbelievably sad time. Soar with the eagles Rob, in your heaven.
Mike Glover
I first met Rob when I started my student flying training at Goodwood in 2015. Over the following years, I was always encouraged and given confidence in my flying ability, and had many memorable student flights with Rob as my instructor. He was always patient, was a lovely warm person to get on with, and had a fun attitude to flying. Will miss his smile and personality and will be sadly missed. My sincere condolences to Rob's wife and his two boys.
Steve and Rosie Brooks
We first met Rob many years ago at an early Revival. We were helping to look after a couple of the air display aircraft and Rob had been given the task of entertaining some primary school classes for the morning. We were more than happy to help by sitting the children in our aeroplanes. Who wouldn’t want to help, here was this incredibly pleasant, friendly chap with such an infectious smile. Little did we know back then just how much we would come to admire and like Rob. Working with him at subsequent Revivals was always such a pleasure and something we genuinely looked forward to. To us, Rob WAS the Revival and it is difficult to imagine future events without him. Just as it is for us sailing in Chi Harbour when the Cub or Harvard fly over. We would always think of Rob and will continue to do so. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues at the untimely loss of one of life’s all too few good guys.
Mike Staite
It was such a shock to hear this sad news. Rob was part of what made Goodwood, Goodwood. He was always around for a chat and advice. He shall be greatly missed. My thoughts are with Donna and the boys at this difficult time.
Hannah
Rob, you truly were one of the best. Your smile was infectious and you appreciated the smallest things so much. I’ll never forget how happy a bowl of chips would make you. You never knew it but if it wasn’t for you, my family wouldn’t be what it is now as I would never have met Tom if you didn’t take a chance on him as a young apprentice. I promise to tell you when he finally proposes to me, one day! Fly high xxx
Zoe Mann
Unbelievably sad news. I have known Rob for most of my 15 years at Goodwood and he was always, without fail, cheerful, helpful and an all round lovely chap. From our days in the portacabin to catching up in the new building, Rob could always be relied upon to take time out to say hello and check in with you. He will be sorely missed. The family and I are heartbroken for your loss.
Amy Harte
I would like to express my sincere, heartfelt condolences to Donna, Zak and Sam. Rob put his family before anything, They were everything to him. He also gave so much to so many, the inspiration and support to all those who loved to fly was immense. There, I used the word I didn't want to hear. Was! It will never be right. Everyone who knew him though will hopefully still hear his voice in their minds, the knowledge and guidance he gave will go on in everyone he taught. I have to hang on to the thought that he will always be there when I fly, in my head telling me to keep that stick back and watch out for the Herberts. As for resetting the analogue altimeter, checking fuel & oil and cleaning the windscreen, all of which I could have done but he just was a gentleman and wanted to help! I no longer 'have a man for that!'.... Utter loss to the world.
Melanie Wright
Over the years I have worked for some good managers then I got to work for you Rob. We made the best team, we ran every decision past one another over the years, and we never disagreed. That fact keeps me strong now, I can hear you saying to me 'do what you need to do Mel' I promise I will do right by you and will push the Flying School in the direction you wanted and will keep your passion alive. I will also try to keep smiling through this heartache, something else you always told us to do, in fact that is the last message I have on my phone from you. No more bad weather days for you Rob, you will have blue skies always XX
Graham Leggat
I only had the opportunity to fly with Rob once and he was a true gent putting me at my ease. Will be sorely missed.
Gillian Davies
This tragedy is beyond words. Soar with the eagles Rob in your heaven.

Rob will always be remembered by us in Liphook Scout group. This year we held an inaugural “Air activities” camp for those of our members who expressed an interest in aviation. Rob was instrumental in welcoming our visiting scouts to Goodwood flying school. Robs enthusiasm for all matters aviation was picked up by our scouts, and we are quite sure some aviation careers will have been inspired by him during our visit. Thankyou Rob,
Malcolm Knight
I have known Rob since the early days of his time with Maintenance when his quiet balanced guidance and friendship led me through the various difficulties of aircraft ownership as they arose. Even though I am no longer involved with the airfield, Rob always greeted me with genuine friendship and humanity and I treasure his memory. Rest in peace Rob, you were a true gentleman and friend./p>
Jillie Green
Rob to me was the absolute heart of Goodwood Flying School, his drive and enthusiasm made it what it is today, always with a big smile and a twinkle in his eye, a true gentleman and a wonderfully kind soul. Rob you will be missed by so many, fly high as your spirit lives on for always. My thoughts are with his Donna and the boys.
Jeff Rooney & Sandra Reid
We were saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Rob. He was an integral part of the aviation community at Goodwood, and to us he was always welcoming and approachable. He helped a lot of people get on the first rung of the aviation ladder and that is a great thing in itself. He will be missed and fondly remembered.
John Marshall
Having known my friend Rob for over 25 years, I'm devastated by his passing. He was the total package - brilliant engineer, brilliant pilot, great sense of fun and an absolute pleasure to be around. It was a privilege to have known Rob and Goodwood will not be the same without him.... My thoughts are with his wife and family at this desperately sad time.
Steve Brown
A kinder more patient gentlemen I've yet to meet. Helped me obtain my wings and let me believe anything was possible. He was a dream maker, especially for my son Lloyd. Gods speed Rob, enjoy endless sunny skies...
Scott Lester
Rob always time for people, I didn’t know him well but he was a true professional and a number of times helped start our Bulldog. He was at the top of his game, being thoroughly competent he was always friendly and helpful without being over bearing. He will be sadly missed and a great loss.
Rob Brown
So very, very sorry to hear this terribly sad news. Such a lovely man, a true gentleman. I've not been able to spend much time at the flying club for several years, mostly due to the effects of an RTA. Still a massive shock to hear, Rob was always so full of vitality, passion for flying, patience and good humour. Heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.
Max Tams
The world is a lesser place without you Rob… Your kindness is an example I shall strive to follow. Learning from you and the gift of flight you gave me, changed my life… I was so lucky to know you Rob, I will miss you every day of my life.
Ken Aitken
I still cannot believe that Rob is gone. He was part of the furniture. He was Goodwood through and through. He was one of us. I shall miss him.
Jeremy Matcham
I first got know Rob at Bishop Luffa through my school mates William & Robert O'Brien. Rob was in the year above me and, from an early stage, had gained a reputation for being one of the smart kids around Messrs Blamire & Bailey's engineering workshops at the School. He became something of a role model for those of us who found a way to demonstrate our better abilities in this practical and technical environment, and I'm sure that Rob had a positive influence on many of the other lads in his own year group. I was also fortunate in having had the opportunity of gaining some early work experiences at Goodwood airfield and it was always a happy occasion to bump into Rob around the aerodrome, and continued doing so at periods over the decades that followed. Rob's progression through the ranks on the Aerodrome left a lasting impression on me; he represented what could be achieved through passion, dedication, and thoroughly good hard work. Latterly, I continued to hear good reports on Rob's activities from my father-in-law, John Akerman, as they were very good friends and shared a passion for flying John's RV-6 from the airfield. If I may offer on behalf of William, Robert, and John: our friend is gone too soon, but will never be forgotten. It would be a fitting tribute to see a scholarship scheme set up in Rob's name.
Max Mingay
I first met Rob in 1996 when I joined Goodwood and he was already a key member of the engineering team - he hadn't changed a bit over the years as the same dedicated and thoroughly decent guy who became the heart of the special place that is Goodwood. My sincere condolences to his family mourning the loss of such a good man, someone for them to be incredibly proud and lost far too soon. RIP Rob, you are remembered and missed by so many.
Wolf-Eckart von Gemmingen
Rob assisted me with the hangarage of my Pipistrel Sinus D-MYWE and I always enjoyed chatting with him when I met him at the aerodrome. He was so kind and helpful. I always intended to take him for a flight in my motor glider but it never happened and it fills me with sadness that we won’t be able to in the future. Rob, we will miss you! My thoughts are with his family and I send my heartfelt condolences.
Nicki Pearce
An absolute privilege just to have known Rob.
Peter Hill
I met Rob nearly 25 years ago when I joined Goodwood. He was the nicest person you could ever wish to meet. He always had time for everyone, and nothing was too much trouble for him. My thoughts are with Donna and the boys at this sad time. Thank you for everything Rob, it was a privilege to have known you.
Garth Gardner
When I first joined the club Rob was one of the first people I met. His friendly, warm greeting was much appreciated. Thereafter whenever we met he was always generous with his time and open and honest with his answers to my questions. Another great facet of his personality was his readiness to smile and make a quip or a joke. His presence and expertise will be greatly missed.
Spencer Davies' Families
Mum's beloved pilot on her 80th, Dad's acquaintance, and the boys recent experience of a very kind enthusiastic man who saw them in the Aeroclub and said "Hey, do you want to sit in the Harvard?" unveiled it in the drizzle and let them all have a go! So kind. So tragic. Sending best wishes to all those close to his heart.
Lydie & Derek Harper
It is in moments like these that words fall short. I first met Rob at The Fighter Collection (Duxford) in 2005 and then later, at the Goodwood Flying School. Rob was an amazing man in every way and I am humbled to have known him as a flight instructor, pilot, engineer, colleague and dear friend. Rob taught me so much and for that I will always be forever grateful. Rob had such a big heart and was always putting others first. Rob was the kindest, wisest and funniest friend; whenever we met, we always had tear of laughter. I will always cherish those fun laughter moments we shared together at Duxford, Goodwood, in the Cub & Harvard. You will always be in our thoughts and we miss you. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Rob's family during these difficult times. Lydie & Derek.
Amanda Emmerson
Still trying to comprehend life at the Flying School without Rob at it’s heart. Its unfathomable that someone with so much energy and enthusiasm is no longer with us. I feel so privileged to have known and worked for such a special person, as part of his team. Kind, selfless, funny, endlessly positive, boundlessly enthusiastic and a real gentleman, who could put anyone at ease. He was such an inspiration! We will miss Rob beyond words, but know that he will always be with us, not least in all of the many special (& funny) memories we hold on to. Sending lots of love, courage and strength to Donna, Zak & Sam - he was so extremely proud of the three of you!
Peter Liddle
It was over 20 years ago that I first met Rob at Goodwood Aircraft Engineering. Since then Rob has always been a welcome part of a visit to Goodwood, either in person on the ground, a cheery "Hello Peter" on the radio or even a wing waggle from the Harvard. It's hard to believe that ready smile will no longer lighten a day and while I feel a great loss it is nothing compared to that of his family who are in my thoughts.
Adrian Standing
I was shocked and very saddened to hear of Robs passing. Whilst only meeting a few times embarking on my LAPL with him in the spring, I found Rob very personable, good company, an inspiring pilot and knowledgeable engineer who loved what he did and instilled in me confidence from the outset. He also took time out to show me the warbirds hanger, a long held interest of mine. I will miss flying with him and can only imagine what a great loss this must be to the club, his friends, colleagues and above all his family. There is no sense or pattern to so many things that happen in this world. It is quite simply very unfair. May I offer my deepest condolences to you all.
William "Bill" Charney
I have been lucky enough to achieve a longtime dream of owning a Beechcraft Staggerwing. It’s an ex-Lend Lease Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm bird that flew in the UK for several years during WWII. After her return to the U.S. and serving several other owners, she became my mistress. I eventually shipped her to New Zealand for restoration. In 2009 she began to take me home…the long way ‘round…westbound. Along the way numerous folks wondered if I planned to take her to the Goodwood Revival. That became a mission and was added to the long list of "gotta do that one fine day" projects. It finally happened in 2012 with a great deal of help from Rob. I've never witnessed such a large nor more genuine smile of joy during his several flights in the old girl. Especially since his two sons were along each time. I had plans for several future flights with him of which he was not aware. They were to be a surprise. Those several flights that I DID have with him in that piece of British Royal Navy history were most meaningful to me. We'll do those future flights with his family as a memorial. Rob's help is still ongoing in many ways even during the Covid pandemic. Many thanks to the Aero Club staff, and ALL AT GOODWOOD who still show their appreciation to this veteran aircraft of the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm and her WWII service to your country. Rob was the embodiment of the phrase “well liked gentleman”. I’m hurting as I write this. I still have difficulty grasping the fact that we have lost him. I’m an ex-farm boy, an ex-fighter pilot, have been in combat, have been many places flying many types of aircraft for 68 years—and have lost many close friends in this game. But I have never become accustomed to losing such friends. I’m just not sophisticated enough to say how much I’m going to miss Rob’s great smile and his good firm handshake. POR--Press On Regardless. In Fighter Pilot parlance: Throw a nickel on the grass…

Firstly I would like to send my sincere condolences to Rob's family and friends. Such a terrible loss for you all. I was so sad to hear of the passing of Rob Wildeboer. Although we never met in person, Rob was responsible for making a significant impact on an occasion that meant a great deal to me and many others. On the 16th August 2019, after years of research and red tape, a memorial was unveiled on Tangmere Airfield on the actual site where a WWII Halifax Bomber had crashed killing all 7 of it's crew. It was a solemn occasion, with all the families of the crew, dignitaries, the Air Cadets and Royal Air Force present. A band played and the highlight of the occasion was to be a Fly Past by the BBMF (including the Lancaster) to honour the 7 brave lads who gave their lives for our freedom. On the day, unfortunately the weather was not clement, with dark skies and storms brewing. I received a phone call to say that the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane would be unable to fly due to the bad weather. Obviously, we were all upset about this, not for ourselves but for the lost crew who deserved a 'nod' from the skies on such a special day. Kate Parkin, who had been heavily involved with the organisation suggested I gave Rob a call. He might be able to help. It was a long shot considering it was the actual day of the event and also due to the dreadful weather conditions. But I hadn't bargained on Rob's determination, spirit and passion for the whole reason we were unveiling a memorial in the first place. He understood the reason for a Fly Past, probably more than most. His brain immediately went into 'action stations' , "Leave it with me," he said "I can't promise, but I'll see what I can do." Looking at the black skies and the bitter wind picking up I knew in my heart that there was no way he could do anything to help. So, the service began as we all stood out on the wind whipped airfield. The Chaplain from 10 Sqn lead the service and it was exceptionally moving. As the inauguration was coming to a close and the hush of 'the Silence' was about to end, a sound high up I the clouds broke through. It was an aircraft. It was Rob! With precision timing he flew past the memorial several times, tipping the wings of the WWII aircraft in salute to the crew. It was all at once the most emotional and yet uplifting experience. It epitomised the Bull Dog mentality, if something should be done, it would be done. Rob's determination to honour those fallen hero's represented the spirit of that lost crew and the thousands like them. To get the job done, no matter what. To see that small aircraft lift and roll and turn on such a bleak day reminded me personally of (albeit a different service) Dunkirk. When the big guns couldn't save the day, the little ones went out and did it. I thank you Rob for honouring the lost crew of HX - 181. I am sure that your actions that day sum up what a selfless, kind and dedicated man you were and I know you will be missed beyond measure. Fly high. Fly free.
Sam Hanson
It is so desperately sad to hear the news of Rob’s passing. I was fortunate enough to work with him at Goodwood and nothing was ever too much trouble. His passion and love of aviation and the Aerodrome rubbed off on everyone who visited or met him and his warmth of character shone through at all times. My thoughts are with all of his family and friends.
Ron Gammons
A terrible shock, our sincere condolences to his wife and family, as others have said a "can do" man and such an enthusiast. Of enormous help when we were shipping Robins to New Zealand and when we were repairing our race car at the Revival. Met up with Rob at Ron Souch's event a West Tisted a few years back. Rob said he had only gone for a few minutes but stayed for hours entranced by the number of aircraft and types on display, a real true enthusiast. The Goodwood extravaganza of the static aircraft display at the Revival came shortly after... such a great loss to all. Soar with the Eagles Rob.
Ian Seager
I still can't believe that Rob's gone. Every single time I met him he was wearing a huge smile, and was bubbling over with infectious enthusiasm. That was how Rob was. Imagine a world where everyone was just a bit more like Rob. Sorely missed, never forgotten and a permanent inspiration. Thanks Rob. Bugger, got that bit of grit in my eye again.
Chris Farnaby MBE
I am personally devastated to learn of this very sad news. My thoughts are with his family, friends and work colleagues and I send my deepest condolences. Rob was such a big part of Goodwood and I have very fond memories of meeting Rob during my time in CAA and I was lucky to have flown with Rob on several occasions. Rob will be missed by the global aviation industry. RIP Rob.
Mike Carter
Rob was such a friendly, helpful and all-round good guy, and a thoroughly professional aviator and role model. It was always a great pleasure to catch up with him at Goodwood. What a tragic loss of a lovely man.
Alan Stokes
I will always remember Rob as a kind and helpful person who took time to be of assistance whenever the need arose. I was shocked and saddened by his loss and Goodwood will never be the same without him.
Graham Holford
In every interaction I had with Rob over the years he was a true gentlemen. Always saying hello and giving me the time of day. I will remember him fondly. The world is a poorer place without him. Thank you for all you did - fly safe Sir!
Gerry Ashton
Rob was a feature of Goodwood Aerodrome since I learned to fly in the 1990's. Initially as an engineer, later as aerodrome manager and latterly at the flying school. Always willing to help with his experience, always ready with a cheerful greeting, for me, he epitomised what general aviation flying was all about, i.e. having fun in the air - safely. His passing is an absolute tragedy and my heart goes out to his family. I shall never cease seeing the Goodwood Harvard or Cub without thinking of him
John Haynes
I will miss him greatly he was one of the best
Paul Thornton
I knew Rob first in Engineering looking after our Archer, and most recently as an instructor on a refresher flight. It was always good to see him around the airfield. He was a caring man, always ready with a friendly greeting and very much part of what makes Goodwood a special place. He will be much missed.
Adam Whitehead
I knew Rob from his first days as apprentice engineer at Goodwood. He was just 17 when we first flew together in a Stampe. Throughout his years at Goodwood he shared an infectious interest in everything, and with everyone around him. Rob somehow took longer strides than most and always propelled himself with discrete focus, enthusiasm and good humour. Our last flight together was his instructor revalidation, just 6 days before his untimely passing. He was an enthusiastic and compassionate man and had become an erudite and most articulate instructor. He said he wanted to train others to do the same, and he would have been great at that too. If only he’d had the chance! It is with great sadness to think we can no longer share his energy, enjoy his wit and watch him continue to inspire others, something of which he was so capable. I, like so many others, will remember him for all of those things - and I will miss him.
Catherine Peel
Rob was one of the first people I met at Goodwood and epitomised everything that is great about the people who work here. Full of enthusiasm and passion he was always available to tell some fascinating stories. He was also incredibly patient and helpful during the many photoshoots I organised at the Aerodrome (!) and even came and talked to the shoot team about what he did and his passion for flying spilled over. I am deeply saddened by the news of his death and my thoughts are with his family. I was hoping one day to book a Warbird flight for my father with Rob and still hope to do so but his company will be sorely missed. A great loss for Goodwood.
Amanda Wickwar
Rob always had a smile on his face, and time for a cheerful greeting. “It’s the Wickwar’s” he would say with a beaming grin to both my husband and I. A true gentleman and one who always went out of his way to be helpful and supportive. A sad and untimely loss of a kind and gentle person, Goodwood won’t be the same without you. Blue skies.
Trevor
Rob was an excellent flying instructor. Personally, he gave me a great deal of support to get back into flying, providing encouragement and targeting the areas needing improvement. He took a genuine interest and went to great lengths to help. Thank you Rob, you are a great loss to the club and as a friend.
Archie Dudgeon
I was introduced to Rob only this year, whilst planning to attend FMSOA 2021. What a great guy ! From my home in the west of Scotland, I soon discovered that we shared the same primary school and the same first job, as kids collecting eggs at Polthooks Farm in Clay Lane in the '60s (ooops - the'70s in Rob's case.....). This background connection led to a lot of chat on the phone and many e-mail exchanges. Although we didn't meet in person, he quickly made me feel absolutely welcome for the FMSOA and made it clear that he would do whatever he could to make my experience at Goodwood memorable. He made me feel like an old friend. His passing must leave a huge void - I can only imagine how family and friends are suffering just now. My deepest sympathies.
Stuart Parker
Truly one of life’s good guys. Rob was one of the first people I met when I joined Goodwood and his enthusiasm for Goodwood and the aerodrome was infectious. More recently I visited the airfield with my family and Rob took time out of his day to show my girls the Harvard and letting them sit in the cockpit. Something they talk about to this day. RIP Rob.
Gaby Russell
Many years ago, Katie Medcraft and I were enjoying an after-work drink in the beautiful sunshine at the Aero club and Rob offered to take us up for what was the most magical flight over Goodwood. He always had a smile on his face and will remain one of the most important memories I have of being a part of this wonderful place. We miss you Rob and will never forget you.
James Peill
What a truly special man Rob was. His love for flying and Goodwood was so infectious that you always come away inspired. He managed to wear all that knowledge and expertise with such humility and gentleness. I will never forget when he flew Adam Waterworth and me over the Goodwood estate, Arundel Castle and the south coast on a beautiful August evening in 2013. It was without doubt, one of the highlights of my time at Goodwood that I will never forget. God be with you, Rob.
Tracey Greaves
I could not have met a man more dedicated to Goodwood and his passion for flying. Rob had a wonderful sense of humour, was a kind sole and always willing to help. He made me feel very welcome when I joined many years ago and we had great fun on a treasure hunt, Rob disappeared into the woods for ages looking for exactly the leaf we needed! This is a huge loss for Goodwood and an even bigger one for his family, I will always remember him when I look up at the planes overhead. With my sincere condolences Tracey
Lou Chater
On a glorious Spring day I unexpectedly found myself testing a range of planes with you Rob.... You were the consummate gentleman and teacher and allaying all of my fears! We barrel rolled the Harvard over my house. You banked, incredibly steeply (!) over the racecourse in the Piper Cub. But my favourite memory will be gliding over Portsmouth in the blaring sunshine as your 'co-pilot' , or so I thought, when you turned and told me I'd been flying solo for the last five minutes.... You knew I was utterly petrified of heights! The kindest, most genuine and calming teacher, and leader, we had. Thank you Rob for all you've done and your legacy.
Josh Hunt
Rob was a one in a million kind of guy. His love for Goodwood and aviation as a whole was second to none. He was kind, gentle, intelligent, but at the same time being one of the most modest people I have ever met. He always gave his all in everything he did and would do anything he could to help anyone across the Aerodrome. As soon as I told him I wanted to fly he took me up for a lesson. He was always just as excited as I was to take to the skies despite his many years behind the yoke; he always flew because he loved too, never because he had to. Rob has always been and will always be an inspiration to me. The Aerodrome and the Estate as a whole has lost one of its brightest lights and he will be truly missed.
Louise Harwood
Rob was possibly one of the nicest people I have ever known. He was always pleased to see you whenever you popped in to the aerodrome. I have one regret, not long before he passed, I was down at the aerodrome and he said he was off to test one of the planes and did I want to go with him, but didn't. I will always look up at the skies and think of him.
John Akerman
I first met Rob in the late 1980s. I rather lost touch in recent years, something I now bitterly regret. Rob was one of the nicest people I've ever met. Invariably kind, helpful, calm, gentlemanly, cheerful and welcoming. His help with the build and maintenance of RV6 G-BZXB was absolutely invaluable. He was such a great aircraft engineer - always had a solution for even the most intractable problem, always ready to wield a spanner to make the solution happen. Indeed, in later years when management roles took up much of his time he was delighted at having any good excuse to roll out the Snap-On tool trolley again. In the early 2000s I did his conversion onto the RV and introduction to strip flying. He was as excellent a pilot as he was an engineer and I was more than glad that he continued to fly the RV over the following 13 years or so. He had such a great feel for the aeroplane and worked really hard to do everything just right. A truly great airman, in all respects. I am so very sorry he's gone. My deepest sympathies go out to all his friends and colleagues and most especially to Donna and the boys.
Sam Jackson
Rob helped me get me back into flying after a couple of years out. A more approachable, patient and kind instructor you could not hope to meet. I’m so saddened by his loss, but I will be forever proud to have had the chance to fly with him. My deepest sympathies to Rob’s family, and to his colleagues and friends at Goodwood.
