Home Farm Visits

A visit to Home Farm gives children a stimulating experience of a working organic mixed farm and a memorable day outside in beautiful countryside. Learning outcomes can be tailored to the topic being studied in school and the age of visiting children.

During a visit to Home Farm children and young people are encouraged to make the connection between food they eat and food production on the farm. Whilst activities and itinerary depend on the time of year, a visit to the farm always involves a tour of the dairy enterprise, including seeing cow sheds and the calf-barn, where children have close but safe access to cows, children make butter from cream, taste fresh, organic (pasteurised) milk, and about the lifecycle of dairy cows. Pigs can be also be visited, after a walk across farmland. In lambing season, children have the opportunity to visit various breeds of ewes and new-born lambs.

Study of the cereal crops grown at Home Farm – during which children grind wheat into flour - provides a further opportunity to talk about the origins of food, the principles of organic farming, and why we farm in this ‘nature-friendly’ way.
